Slice of Life

As my husband LOVES to say, "Every day is Saturday!" at our house. As you may have read previously, this has been a dental-heavy week for us, with three of us visiting the dentist and the baby cutting a tooth. In between our appointments (and general misery) we took a trip to visit Moomaw's Farm (my mom and dad's place).

This is a picture from our trip out there last week, but it's cute of my sister and Juji, so I am including it. It's my blog, I can do what I want!

It's getting pretty hot in our area, so our major assignment from Moomaw and Poopaw was to water the tomatoes, pomegranates and grapes.

Here is Julianne, supervising the watering of "her" grapes. Of course, everything at Moomaw's Farm is "hers" (so she says), but she is especially possessive of these silly grapes.

I have a ridiculously cute photo of Kasiah in her little pool, but the child is naked. I've been sitting here debating whether or not to post it and have decided that since my blog is not private (yet) I'm going to pass on the naked baby pictures. Just know that it is cute.

It's early here - like 3amish early - and the temperature is 81 degrees outside. I feel the urge to go running but it is both too dark and too dangerous! There is a very specific window of time that anyone is able to (safely) exercise outside - and it's a very difficult time of day to commit to....dawn. Once the sun beats down on the earth for thirty minutes, the day is done. A few months ago we picked up a pool that was on special at Target in anticipation of not being able to do anything else outside. Our goal is to set it up at the beginning of next week - once the back yard is cleaned up a bit. We are SO EXCITED! Until then, this is how we spend our days:

On a final note, because this post about nothing is getting long, my husband picked out my "going out" outfit the other day. It was really sweet of him - and it reminded me that dressing up every now and then is important. It's easy to lose your femininity between changing diapers and constantly smelling like milk! Here's the finished product, although this photo didn't capture the turquoise earrings that MADE the outfit! teehee The Girl's Night Out was fun - we had sushi and daiquiri's!

Father's Day!

Teeth...ugh

Words I would use to describe Kasiah: lovely, sweet, cuddly, relaxed, giggly, courteous. NOT irritable or whiny....oh the things teething does to happy babies! Her upper right tooth is angling to make a debut this week, and she is not a happy camper. Poor baby. But it could be worse...

Today was a day our house has been dreading for awhile. About two months ago I noticed a cavity in one of Julianne molars. I was flabbergasted - "But we brush twice a day!" I told the dentist. The dentist then informed me (in that snarky dentist voice) that she was sure snacks were our undoing...apparently delicious treats like goldfish and granola bars get stuck in the teeth before nap time and voila - cavities fester. I teared up. I felt like failure. My poor baby. My poor UNCOOPERATIVE baby. How on earth was she going to let the dentist give her a filling? The answer was more awful than the diagnosis - they were going to have to put her to sleep. WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

We had to wait SIX weeks for an appointment - it's not every day an anesthesiologist visits the dentist. Rather than dwell on it, I decided to be a little more proactive and started a new regimen of brushing after breakfast, lunch and dinner and flossing before bed. Julianne fell into the routine really well. When yesterday finally arrived, we explained that she was going to need to eat and drink a lot because tomorrow (which is now today) she couldn't eat or drink until AFTER we visited the dentist. This morning went really well and we made it to the dentist for our 1pm appointment without too much fuss over not eating or drinking ALL MORNING.

She took the prick to put her to sleep like a champ, and within minutes she was out. The anesthesiologist carried her away to set her up with an IV and monitors and the doctor went to work. They did x-rays to make sure there weren't any other issues (there weren't!) and quickly took care of her filling.

It all went smoothly...until she woke up. She was mad as a hornet. I don't blame her, the numb feeling is icky. By the time we got home, though, she was recovered enough to suck down a popsie (popsicle for those of you who don't speak toddler) and sit on her daddy's lap and watch Star Wars.

So there you have it, people. Take your kids to the dentist and brush regularly. Also, choose snacks that won't stick to your teeth - things like apples, carrots, and celery are good choices.

Tomorrow is my turn...I get to have a crown placed on a tooth I broke on an unexpected bone.

Oh yay.

Books, Books, Books!

Part of our summer adventure includes books. Last week I signed all four of us up for the Summer Reading Program at our local library and already I have a book recommendation for you!

I can't tell you much about "Little Bee" by Chris Cleave without giving the story away - just trust me on this one.

Am I the only one who thinks of Ron Burgundy whenever I say "San Diego"?

Last weekend was our very first summer adventure trip! We hit up the old stomping grounds - central San Diego. Friday night we rolled into town earlier than expected (when does that ever happen?!) and hit up one of our family favorites - Daphne's! YUM-O! We have yet to find a comparable establishment in Palm Springs.

After our gyros and pita burgers, we hustled down to the beach to find June-gloom in full force.

Julianne declared, "Let's go home!"  Oh dear.

Ten minutes later we left and decided to pop by our old place. We saw lots of neighbors who couldn't believe how big Julianne had gotten and admired our beauty Kasiah. When we left for hell the desert, Siah was still cooking and Juji was one month shy of two! It was great to see all those friendly faces.

Saturday we spent the early morning at Sea World. By then it was apparent that Julianne wasn't in top form (we have been battling what I think is Valley Fever), but she seemed to recover enough to ride the rides and watch the Dolphin Show - which was incredible!  Lots of acrobatics - and of course I didn't get a single photo.

By 11am, though, we were done. We spent the rest of the afternoon visiting our friends whom we desperately miss and enjoying the San Diego air (it's moist!).

We had so many wonderful moments this trip, but one of my favorites was laying in bed Sunday morning with the girls while we watched a movie. It was so peaceful and we were all happy just to be together. Once we finally got around to leaving the hotel, we met up to celebrate a dear friend's birthday at Studio Diner - that place is great!

The plan was to head to the zoo, but Juji lost her supper (the movie "Parenthood" comes to mind) so we cut the visit short and instead headed to the Farm for a couple of hours before heading home.  Everyone feels better once visiting Moomaw's Farm!
